1st Grade Update!

Our first full week back at school was jam packed full of learning and fun!

Reading

We have been really diving deep into informational texts and looking at the text features that authors use to teach us. We've noticed captions, labels, and even close ups on pictures! It is fun to be a book detective and look for these text features in the books we read. We identify text features and ask ourselves, "Why did the author choose to use this?" We are learning so much!

We have also been practicing a new way to summarize the books we read. We answer find the following information:

Someone:

Wanted:

But:

Then:

So:

This helps us identify the characters, what they wanted in the story, the problem and the solution. 

Writing

In writing, we have started our informational chapter book unit and wow! I'm so impressed with the knowledge my first grade kiddos have on a wide range of topics. As writers, we can also be teachers. We write informational books to teach are reading something new.

Science

As we begin to wrap up our unit on solids and liquids, we also start to reflect on all the things we've learned. The last few weeks, we have really focused on liquids.

Social Studies

Yesterday was Martin Luther King Day. We had the day off of school but it is important to know why there is a day dedicated to MLK. First graders were asked to do some research over the weekend and this morning. We learned so much more and shared our new learning on our Padlet wall. Please feel free to join the conversation!

Padlet is a great way to share our learning with each other. We can read what our classmates have posted and we even discovered that we can respond to their posts!
