Our Insect Visitor

Yesterday, we found a new friend in our classroom. We were going to set him free outside right away, but we had so many questions about him. So we kept him for just a little while. Here is what happened!

We wondered so many things about the insect:

-Can it fly?
-Does it bite?
-Where did it come from?

We also noticed things:

-It has 6 legs and 3 body parts.
-It has pinchers.
-It hides in the grass in its cup.

We asked our resident insect and nature expert, Mr. Berger. He did some research and told us that our insect friend was a Scarites subterraneus - Big-headed Ground Beetle.

We let our insect friend go before recess but we still had a lot of questions when we got back from lunch. We researched the beetle using www.kidrex.org and made screenchomps to share our new learning.

We also rehearsed our plays outside and on stage. It was a very exciting Friday!
